Kory Quinn & The Comrades (CD Release show!!!)
Interview by Cliff Snyder of the Indianapolis Songwriters Cafe - Wednesday, May 8th 2008
Kory Quinn took a moment to
talk with us here at the Songwriters Cafe about his upcoming CD release show on June 12th. If you've not heard Kory yet I'd highly recommend a visit towww.myspace.com/koryquinn He's one of Indy's hardest
working songwriters and is out there doing some really great work!
CS - Thanks for talking with me about the new CD Kory. I'm biased because I've had your demo CD for a while but I'm really looking forward
to a full release by you and the boys. What's the title and what can you tell us about the CD?
KQ - well, firstly thanks for the invitation to speak with you. to answer your question the title of this album is BOUND FOR GLORY. it is an
effort to tell a story through a collection of songs. since you have that demo, you have about half of the album already, although those
recordings were too rough to actually release. we decided than to start fresh again to re-create those and write some new tunes to round it
out.
CS - So when I've seen you & the Comrades out at shows you're generally performing as trio with with guitar, upright bass & banjo. Is the
album similar to that live sound or did you add more to the recordings? I've always heard a lot of the Avett Brothers sound in the Comrades (in a
very good way!)
KQ - thanks. we haven't gotten that compliment a lot but we are big fans of the Avett Brothers. With the album we tried to stay as minimal
as possible. We all agreed a lot of bands produce great albums but can't live up to these expectations live so we went the other
direction.
CS - So Bound For Glory will be a pretty straight-forward album with a sound similar to your live shows then, right? As a songwriter, are there
any particular themes or anything you're trying to get across with this album?
KQ - Yes very much so. As we began recording the album a story started to be told, so there are some songs on here that we have never
played live, since they were written just for the album. no "particular" theme, just trying to stay as true as possible to the traditions of folk
music, and the idea of the album. of course there are some derivations of traditional folk music throughout, but all the seams
fit.
CS - Sounds like good stuff comin' Kory, thanks again for filling us in on this, I'm looking forward to the show. The CD
release party is Thursday, June 12th at the Upper Room in Broad Ripple, above the Broad Ripple Steakhouse, the show kicks off @ 9:30pm and it's
going to be a good time, come on out & pick up a copy of Bound For Glory!
